Case Study 01 – Female Pattern Baldness

A 29 year old Asian female presented with extensive hair thinning, experiencing for 3+ years, no apparent family history of female hair loss, current medical issues include Diabetes Type 2 (treating her Diabetes with a medication called Metformin). No other treatments or products previously used. She reported progressive thinning across her hairline and mid-section along with noticeable shedding of hairs in the shower, on her pillow, and on her clothes. Has been depressed about her hair and suffers from a loss of confidence and that has forced her to wear a hat or scarf when going out.. She doesn’t suffer from any pain, itching or scalp issues. She has done her own research on treatments for hair loss. A friend, currently treating his hair loss, recommended Ashley & Martin, as his results were outstanding.

Examination revealed an extensive thinning frontal hairline as well as widening mid-section , and decreased luster and shine of the hair overall, consistent with a diagnosis of female pattern hair loss stage 2. There was no scalp inflammation, and no evidence of infection or scarring scalp disease.

Low level laser light therapy was initiated with a LaserCap, used 30 minutes every day. No topical or oral treatments were initiated. At her follow-up visit at five months, the patient reported ease of use, and a significant decrease in shedding, and described her hair as “shinier” and “healthier.” and said she had noticed an increase in hair regrowth. Her self-confidence has also grown and she can go out socially without wearing a hat or scarf.

Photos revealed a significantly increase in hair density through her hairline and mid-section, and noticeable healthy hair. Figure 1 shows the comparison between the baseline and 5 month appearance. Further use of Low level Laser light therapy is needed to achieve maximum regrowth and maintenance.
