Case Study 17 – Medical Treatment Solves Women’s Hair Loss
Jennifer* came to Ashley and Martin because her hair was sparse and so thin at the front that her scalp was clearly visible. A full time mother, Jennifer noticed her hair thinning in the front and temples two years ago after she had finished breast feeding her last child. Extremely concerned by the large amount of hair being shed in the shower and when brushing the 31 year old discovered her mother and aunts had all suffered hair loss at a similar age to her. Unsure about her options but knowing she wanted to find out if she could be helped, Jennifer called Ashley and Martin to make an appointment with a Hair Loss Consultant.
At her initial examination her consultant noted Jennifer’s hair was brittle and dry, her part was widening and her hair was diffuse in the temples and front third of her hairline. The consultant also observed Jennifer’s scalp to be noticeable through her hair all over. Jennifer discussed the current stressors in her life and her family history of hair loss as well as her medical history. Coupled with her physical examination this information led to a diagnosis of Androgenic Alopecia and Telogen Effluvium (TE).
